Terminology Used During Conflict And Crisis

News reports and experts are using terminology that many are not familiar with. Here is a list of words relating to conflict and crisis.

Amid War

Amid war means in or into the middle of (during amid the fighting)

Armed Conflict

Armed Conflict is combat between forces both possessing weapons of war.


Besiege to surround with armed forces

Conflict Resolution

Conflict resolution is when two or more parties to find a peaceful solution to a disagreement among them.

Diplomacy is when the conduct of international relations by negotiation rather than by force.

Functional Conflict

Functional Conflict is when both parties are pleased with the conflict management process and outcome.


Geopolitics is the impact geography has on a countries politics and public policy. In fact, there is often a certain level of political power linked to a country’s geography. (International Relations)

Global North

The ‘Global North’ encompasses the rich and powerful regions such as North America, Europe and Australia.

Global South

The ‘Global South’ refers broadly to Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Oceania.

Legitimate power

Legitimate power is the Influence one has because of their formal position or role.

Peace Resolution

Peace resolution is when a country is not in a state of war or disagreement.
